SUMMARY:An eighteenth-century entrepreneur: Sarah Baker’s theatre on the Bayle and her other Kentish Theatres\, 1737-1816 A talk by Dr Jean Baker\, hosted by Folkestone Museum
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jean Baker (not a descendant of Sarah Baker) worked as a journalist for some years. In 2000 she completed a PhD at the University of Kent that explored the significance of provincial theatre in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. \n“As I sifted through some old papers in the Folkestone Library archives a few years ago\, a tattered cutting from an eighteenth-century newspaper fell from the bundle I was about to investigate. In smudgy\, hard-to-read print the scrap of paper advertised a week of entertainments that had taken place at ‘the New-Theatre-Folkestone’ in the early spring of 1775.\nAmong the ‘usual diversions’ on offer were tightrope-walking\, comic dancing\, musical dramas\, operas and pantomimes. Tickets it stated could be bought of a Mrs Sarah Baker at ‘Mr Tart’s upon the Bayle’ and potential patrons were advised to be quick about it as ‘the Company’s stay will be very short’.”\nThis talk will focus on the extraordinary\, too-long-forgotten woman behind this announcement\, on her Bayle theatre\, and on the four ‘great grand’ theatres\, as she described them\, that she built elsewhere in Kent at the end of the eighteenth century. \nThe talk is free but\, as with all our talks\, they tend to fill up quickly. For further details or to reserve a seat  call 01303 257946 and select option 0 (office hours only) or call into Folkestone Museum & Town Hall. Refreshments will be available after the talk\, donations

This year’s competition is the first of its kind; we hope to hold it annually from this year forward. SUMMARY:BEATBOX BABY RAVE
DESCRIPTION:St. John’s Church and Hall Folkestone • St. John’s Church Road\, CT19 5BQ Folkestone\, England \n\n\n\n\n\nCome with your little one(s) and enjoy a live beatboxing sound track to dance and move to with precious bonding time together and the chance to meet new and old friends. Whilst having fun\, sow valuable seeds of creativity\, freedom of expression\, experimentation and a love for music! \nChildren respond by naturally being in the moment. They dance\, move\, play\, go with the flow. Adults are invited to follow their lead\, let go the mind and drop into their body whilst I offer encouraging and inspiring words (a bit like a sound journey). When I was a kid\, I remember my Mum so free and expressive on the dance floor and that memory still inspires me to help you do the same. Everything is optional\, it’s very relaxed and usually everyone enjoys a bit of a boogie! Come and relish a magical space whilst creating community and recharging your batteries. I look forward to seeing you there! \nWhat is Beatboxing?\nA vocal art form that uses the voice to mimic drum beats\, instruments and other sound effects. A loop station allows me to record and loop my voice to create original pieces of music. \nWhat to Bring?\nBring anything you would usually take on a trip to the park. \nThere is usually some parking down this road and behind the hall. If you can car share\, all the better. \nPlease show kindness to the community and if you are not well\, wait until you are symptom free before coming to one of these events. \nABOUT THE HOST:\nJamie Cahill\nMusic artist\, beatboxer\, workshop leader and meditation and sound journey teacher/facilitator. It is my honour and joy to co-create this space with you and make a unique sound track for you all to enjoy. It is my mission to help as many people as I can to express themselves to the fullest and let go of their inhibitions. \nTickets £6 cash on the door or via fienta.com-beatbox-baby-rave-55531 \n

SUMMARY:Tower Theatre Jazz Club Featuring Mario Bakuna Trio
DESCRIPTION:WORLD JAZZ LIVE SESSIONS AT THE TOWER – Hosted by Maiuko \nMario Bakuna\, a sparkling guitarist\, plays with palpable feeling – his virtuosic fluency on the fretboard is controlled and flourishes are perfectly placed. His voice has a texture like heavy cloth’. Songlines \n  \nAfter a very successful season performing at international festivals and prestigious music venues in Europe\, Africa and Brazil\, promoting his previous album\, Mario Bakuna’s latest release is Brazilian Landscapes. \nConceived by Mario Bakuna\, Brazilian Landscapes celebrates the best of Brazilian music and features new arrangements of material by great composers such as Emilio Santiago\, Marcos Valle\, Claudio Bertrami\, Gilberto Gil\, João Bosco\, and the ‘forrozeiros’ Dominguinhos and Luiz Gonzaga.  Brazilian Landscapes is a legitimate piece of Brazilian Jazz and a tribute to the culture and memory of Brazilian people and is the result of years of inspiration he drew upon while travelling through Brazil\, experiencing its rhythmic and harmonic richness. \nFrom the arid landscape in the northeast that’s brought to the chorus of songs of forró\, baião and xaxado\, to the African influence found in Ijexá\, the popularity of Samba and the sophistication of Bossa Nova\, Mario and his musicians celebrate the most musically-rich territory on Earth. \nMario Bakuna is a London-based Brazilian composer\, singer and guitar player\, with twenty years of professional experience. He is a graduate of the Free University of Music in Sao Paulo\, Brazil. Whilst there he studied with musicians such as Olmir Stocker\, Roberto Sion and Roberto Bomilcar (the pianist who played with Frank Sinatra during his visit to Brazil). \nHe travelled to Europe to expand his knowledge and skills and since settling in London Mario Bakuna became one the most prominent names and a reference of Brazilian Music in England. Mario widely performs in Europe at distinguished stages together with the finest musicians (such as Jean Toussaint\, Liam Noble\, Ricardo dos Santos\, Edmundo Carneiro\, Cacau Queiroz\, Alain Jean Marie\, Dudu Penz\, and Filó Machado). His previous album show Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia – recorded in Paris alongside the renowned Brazilian percussionist Edmundo Carneiro – travelled to pretty much most countries in Europe\, not to mention Brazil and Africa\, with sold-out nights and great feedback everywhere.  Mario’s latest release as a quartet is Brazilian Landscapes. \n  Doors open from 6.30pm\n  Unreserved seating\nA PortCaia Production in association with The Tower Theatre

SUMMARY:Royal Opera House Live: The Barber of Seville
DESCRIPTION:Creative Folkestone presents The Barber of Seville (ROH live). \nWhen Rosina falls in love with a mysterious young suitor who calls himself Lindoro\, she must use all her cunning – and a little help from her local barber – to outwit her calculating guardian Dr Bartolo. \nExpect heart-melting serenades\, ridiculous disguises and a fairytale ending waiting just out of reach. From the barber’s famous opening number ‘Largo al factotum\,’ with its cry of ‘Figaro! Figaro!\,’ to Rosina’s feisty aria ‘Una voce poco fa\,’ Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera is a riotously entertaining affair. Rafael Payare makes his Royal Opera House debut conducting an outstanding international cast that includes Andrzej Filończyk\, Aigul Akhmetshina\, Lawrence Brownlee and Bryn Terfel. \nPlease note this performance is sung in Italian with English subtitles. \nRunning time: 225 minutes including a 20 minute interval. \nAge Guidance: TBC \nBook this event online or email the box office at boxoffice@creativefolkestone.org.uk
