DESCRIPTION:Loosely connected to the world of jazz but realistically inhabiting their own realm\, singer and violinist Alice Zawadzki\, and pianist and percussionist Fred Thomas invite our Folkestone audience into a magical world of storytelling\, delving into the golden age of song with the warmth and spirit of their trademark multi-lingual settings of European folk songs\, as well as pieces from Alice’s latest album\, Within You Is A World Of Spring. \n\n\n\nAlice’s musical friendship with award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer Fred Thomas\, has grown out of almost a decade of playing together\, finding joy in their shared obsessions and richness in the hidden stories of each song they embrace. \nThis is a sound-world sitting somewhere between the pith of folkloric music\, campfire intimacy\, and classical lyricism. Towards the end of tonight’s special one-off concert\, they will be joined by their friends\, the Sacconi Quartet\, for a luxurious finale of chamber music at its most luminous\, thoughtful\, and quixotic. \nAge Restrictions\nCert 18+ \nTickets\n\nPre-booking is preferred but cash and card payments will be accepted on the door. \nQuestions or queries? Email the Festival ManagerFor more information\, \n\n\n£16 Full Price\n£10 Under 35s

SUMMARY:Blithe Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11th – Saturday 13th May \nFHODS are delighted to present their production of Blithe Spirit in May 2023 – it will be a hoot! \nAccomplished mystery writer Charles Condomine invites the rather eccentric local psychic medium Madame Arcati to his delightful home in Kent\, for dinner and a séance. The invitation is under false pretences\, however\, as Charles is really only interested in acquiring ‘lingo’ for his next novel – about a ‘homicidal medium’. \nThe evening takes a spectacular turn when Charles’s first wife Elvira returns unexpectedly\, demanding Charles’s attention. This has ominous – and hilarious – consequences for Charles’s second wife Ruth; particularly since Elvira has been dead for seven years! \nNoël Coward’s classic ‘improbable farce’ has never fallen from popularity since its first performance in 1941 and continues to be performed all over the world. In fact\, the original run set the West-End record for non-musical plays and was not surpassed until 1957 by none other than The Mousetrap! \nStalls \nAdults £16 | Members £14 | Under 18s £11\nGallery\nAdults £14 | Members £12 | Under 18s £11\nDoors open one hour before the performance

SUMMARY:The Big Beer Band & Special Guests
DESCRIPTION:Sat 29 Apr\, 7.45pm \n\n\nTo celebrate the BIG opening weekend of Folkestone’s Music Month in May Festival we are proud to be hosting the (Infamous) Big Beer Band. \nThis 18 piece band are truly one of the very best for contemporary big-band jazz. For this extra-special event they will be joined by special guest vocalists including Jessica Hynes\, Katie Bradley\, Nina Clark and Sophia Stutchbury \nCLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nThe Big Beer Band was formed in October 1989 and has played to audiences every Monday night for more than 30 years\, nearly. Its members are alumni of NYJO\, London music colleges\, West End players\, and semi-pro jazz musicians from London and the southeast. \nWe are a contemporary big band celebrating the greatest music from the most iconic arrangers and bands over the last 50 years. These include Ellington\, Basie\, Rich\, Ferguson\, Mingus\, Goodwin\, Severinsen\, GRP\, and UNT to mention a few. Our extensive music library is both challenging and exciting – much of the music is new\, so who knows what to expect! The band is well-known in London musical circles\, West End pro players have heard of us\, and many of them have played with us as well. This of course has the added benefit of giving the band a large pool from which to draw its talent. \nContemporary Big band jazz is a curious art form\, relying on apparently opposing ideas of individualism and teamwork. It is here many bands fail by assembling a vast arsenal of all-star soloists and the team spirit can be undermined by strong differences of musical opinion on the bandstand. On occasions\, the band can be so tightly drilled that its precision can be likened to that of a military ensemble and the crucial elements of swing and spontaneity are lost. A successful big band\, therefore\, is one which treads the fine line between these two poles with the result that the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. \nThere is no shortage of jazz talent within its ranks many of the players have been written up in the press as being the stars of their particular instruments. The crucial difference is that we have been playing together for more than 30 years. \n\n\n\n\n\nNo Age Restriction \nTickets\n£15 Standard\n£13.50 Members and Library Collective
