SUMMARY:SALT + EARTH: Magical Curves (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Wed 30 Aug\, 2pm – Thu 31 Aug \n\n\nThis workshop\, led by Rubiane Maia\, will bring together a group of people interested in experiencing a process of divination focused on the observation\, collection and mapping of accidental forms found on natural surfaces\, rocks and landscapes. Through individual and collective exercises\, the group will be motivated to develop poetic\, visual and performative narratives that can express ways of establishing a sensitive relationship with nature. \nThe Magical Curves is a speculative art project based on an ancient divination technique called Geomancy\, which enables us to read the future by observing drawings\, marks and stains on earth or sand surfaces. Like any divinatory process\, it is something that is rationally inexplicable\, but which\, in its intuitive singularity\, inevitably combines important aspects of care\, ecology and materiality. Following this research\, the aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of people interested in experiencing a process of opening a collective oracle focused on the observation\, collection and mapping of accidental forms that can be found on natural surfaces\, rocks and landscapes around Folkestone Town. Through individual and collective exercises\, the group will be motivated to develop poetic\, visual and performative narratives that can express ways of establishing a sensitive relationship with nature. \nAge Restrictions\n18+ \nTickets FREE\, booking required\nBook this event online or email the box office at boxoffice@creativefolkestone.org.uk \nParticipants must register in advance and be available for the entirety of the two day workshop.\nSocial media: Website\n@rubianemaia_artworksEvent running times: 2pm – 8pm \n

SUMMARY:Litsa Tunnah & James Francis Brown - Violin & Piano recital
DESCRIPTION:Programme: \n Spring Sonata- Beethoven 1770 1827 \nThe Lark Ascending- Vaughan Williams 1872 1958 \nViolin Sonata- Brown 1969  \n  \nBiographies: \n Winner of numerous awards and prizes violinist Litsa Tunnah has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious concert venues. Highlights have included Litsa’s debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Paganini under Ben Pope\, and Tchaikovsky at Farnham Malting’s with conductor Alexander Walker. Litsa made her Russian debut in Moscow to huge critical acclaim and was invited to return to St Petersburg for further performances which were documented in a film recorded by ITV. \n Frequently in demand as a recitalist she has performed in prestigious venues throughout the UK and overseas including the Purcell Room\, Wigmore Hall\, St James Piccadilly\, King’s Place\, Regents Hall\, Martinu Hall Prague and Trieste Opera House. She has also performed more recently at the Palace of Westminster which led to a special request for a series of six performances in the capital for the Lord Mayor of London. \n Litsa is committed to premiering new works in her programmes and collaborates with renowned composers. She was specially commissioned to record Boris Pigovat’s complete violin works and excerpts from the CD have been broadcast on the Israeli Classical Music Channel. Other notable collaborations include the premiere performance of Geoffrey Palmer’s ‘Hadassah Variations’ for violin and orchestra which was broadcast by the BBC\, and a project working with the renowned British composer David Matthews performing his works for solo violin. Litsa also appeared at St Martin in the Fields performing the World Premiere of Pigovat’s ‘Birth of Venus’ for violin and orchestra which has since been dedicated to her by the composer. Upcoming dates include Litsa’s premiere of Peter Seabourne’s ‘Thread’s’ for  solo violin which has been written and dedicated to her. \n Highlights of the past season have included a USA tour where Litsa performed at Carnegie Hall\, and filming in Mumbai for a documentary on Synaesthesia sponsored by Suzuki. \n  \nThe release in late 2018 by Resonus Classics of the CD The Heavens and the Heart\, conducted by George Vass\, has confirmed James Francis Brown’s reputation for highly-sophisticated and energetic works which have seen his following grow rapidly in recent years as audiences respond to his rare ability to imbue the traditional tonal landscape of classical music with a fresh sense of purpose. \n This recent recording immediately gained two broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and prompted Guy Rickards\, in the January 2019 edition of Gramophone Magazine\, to say “This new release from Resonus is the first of any of his orchestral works\, and what a disc it is! The Trio Concertante…is a glorious single-movement triple concerto for violin\, viola and cello that belongs in the topmost rank of British string-orchestral music.” \n  His music covers a wide range of genres featuring chamber ensembles\, choirs and orchestras and it is regularly performed by many of today’s leading musicians including Steven Isserlis\, Tasmin Little\, Emma Johnson\, the Badke Quartet\, Jack Liebeck and many of the major orchestras throughout the UK.  \n A recording by Members of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome was released in 2019. \n “Seldom does one hear new music that marries such daunting technical skill and virtuosic demands with so much ease and life-affirming joy….” Mark Lehmann\, American Record Guide\, 2012. \nAdmission by programme on the door £12\, FOM members £10 & Children Free. \n  \n      \n  \n

SUMMARY:Melting Vinyl: Courtney Marie Andrews + Special Guests
DESCRIPTION:Lauded US singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews will be joining Melting Vinyl/Quarterhouse for this very intimate special headline show. \n\n\nAfter more than a decade on the road\, the Phoenix-born songwriter\, poet\, and painter finally had the space to process all the highs and lows of a life of constants. She was finally ready to make a record of triumph\, while not completely forgetting the years that made her. That record is her last album Loose Future. \nHer early pursuits led to her playing in punk bands in high school before becoming a touring member of Jimmy Eat World at just 18 years old\, and from there Courtney went on to release a series of acclaimed albums. She garnered her first GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Americana Album” for 2020’s “Old Flowers’’. \nMeanwhile\, the record closed out 2020 on year-end lists from Good Morning America\, Magnet\, and Uncut. The New York Times raved\, “Courtney Marie Andrews’s luminous new album\, ‘Old Flowers\,’ epitomises the aftermath of breaking up: loneliness\, bittersweet memories\, recriminations\, regrets\, temptations\, lessons of experience.” \nHighlighting “Burlap String\,” Rolling Stone claimed\, “Driven by acoustic guitar\, the song brings to mind classic Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell\, but Andrews’ bell-clear voice and fearless message of introspection are unmistakably her own.” Of the album\, Stereogum attested\, “up front in all of it is Andrews’ voice\, wringing beauty out of pain and self-realisation.” Along the way\, she also unveiled her debut poetry collection\, Old Monarch. \n7pm Doors Open\, Music from 8pm \n\n\n\n\n\nAge Restrictions\n14+\, under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult \nTickets\n£15 Standard\n£10 Concession\n£5 U21\n£19 On the Door \nBook this event online or email the box office at boxoffice@creativefolkestone.org.uk \nBook now

Before this\, Charles spent two years as Organ Scholar at St Philip’s Cathedral\, Birmingham. \n Before moving to Birmingham\, Charles was fortunate to be Organ Scholar at Holy Trinity Church\, Folkestone; St Mary-the-Virgin\, Dover as well as St Edmund’s School\, Canterbury. It was his time at the latter which offered the opportunity to regularly play at Canterbury Cathedral\, where he still occasionally deputises\, and Rochester Cathedral. During this time he studied the organ with Adrian Bawtree and Ben Saul.  \n From September 2023\, Charles will continue his organ studies on a scholarship to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, New York in the class of Prof. Nathan Laube. He is grateful for the generosity of the Eric Thompson Charitable Trust\, the Kent County Organists’ Association and the Friends of the Music of Holy Trinity\, Folkestone in their support toward his future studies.” \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Buzzcocks
DESCRIPTION:Fri 14 Jul\, 7pm \n\n\nPunk rock legends Buzzcocks are coming to Folkestone this summer. \nFormed by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto in 1976\, Buzzcocks went on to become one of the most iconic and genre-defining bands of a generation. The original lineup was completed by the addition of Steve Diggle and John Maher before infamous gigs with the Sex Pistols and more. \nFew bands or artists have had the longevity and sustained creative energy to produce the seemingly endless stream of truly original and fantastic pop songs that Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle have consistently delivered over the last four decades. Original and best. \nWith the untimely passing of Pete Shelley in December 2018\, Buzzcocks have continued to play live shows with founding member\, Steve Diggle\, taking over vocal duties to front the band. \nThis summer Buzzcocks will be here in Folkestone proving once again why they are and still remain\, an inspiring and pioneering band. \nSupport comes from Folkestone’s very own punks The Defiant Ones. \nSoap\, Bunny and Peck learnt to play primitive rock ‘n’ roll in the deepest\, darkest depths of Folkestone in the late 80’s. \nFast forward 30 years and this time round they have found a kindred spirit in Howlin’ Marc Heywood. Marc brings his tortured howl to the party\, hollerin’ and a hootin’ his way through some of the most primal beats this side of the ice age. A match made in hell. \nPlus DJ Alex Terry \nPresented in partnership with Amazonian Promotions \n\n\n\n\n\nAge Restrictions\n14+\, under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult \nTickets\n£22 Standard \nBook this event online or email the box office at boxoffice@creativefolkestone.org.uk
