SUMMARY:TANSY DAVIES (COMPOSER) AND JAMES FISHER(ARTIST)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting evening where Tansy Davies (composer) and James Fisher (artist) discuss their work in progress with John Woolrich (composer)\, accompanied by audio visuals. We’ll then be treated to a solo set by Tansy from 8.30pm accompanied by James Fisher’s video projections\n\n\n\n\nBorne out of a fascination with nature and shamanism\, and a grinding rhythmic energy\, the music of Tansy Davies has been described as both ‘ sleek\, hot\, earthy’ and ‘transparent\, brazenly beautiful’. Her music is championed by ensembles including New York Philharmonic\, Ensemble Intercontemporain\, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra\, and at festivals including Ultima\, Présences\, Donuaueschinger Musiktage\, and Warsaw Autumn. Between Worlds\, an operatic response to 9/11\, was premiered by English National Opera in 2015\, and in 2018 her chamber opera Cave was premiered with Mark Padmore\, Elaine Mitchener\, and London Sinfonietta. She has taught composition at both Royal Academy of Music\, London\, and at the Bloomington School of Music\, Indiana. Recent projects include Nightingales: Ultra-Deep Field for Arditti Quartet\, Monolith: I Extend My Arms\, for the strings of Britten Sinfonia\, and a residency at Concertgebouw Amsterdam culminating in the ensemble piece Soul Canoe. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Into The Woods
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\n\n“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical Into the Woods. \nOur fabulous FHODS Youth Section\, previously bringing you the classic Bugsy Malone\, are delighted to present the Broadway version of Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. \nThe story follows the Baker and his wife who wish to have a child\, Cinderella who wishes to go to the King’s Festival\, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk.  When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighbourhood witch\, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family\, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. \nAlso in the woods\, we meet Little Red\, who is trying to visit her grandmother\, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls\, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel\, and the Princes chasing after their loves. \nBy the end of Act I\, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after\, but in Act II\, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant\, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom\, but sacrifices must be made. \nRecently made into a film by Disney\, this Broadway version brings even more twists along the way\, more songs and a lot more humour! \nYou won’t want to miss this classic musical\, originally performed by a fantastic cast\, including Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason\, brought to life at The Tower Theatre\, by our incredibly talented Youth Section. \nTickets\nAdults £11 | Under 18s  £8 \nDoors from 6pm \n  \nFHODS YOUTH SECTION presents Stephen Sondheim’s INTO THE WOODS \nMusic and Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM | Book by JAMES LAPINE | Originally Directed on Broadway by James Lapine| Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick \nBy arrangement with Music Theatre International \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nTIME\n(Friday) 19th April  7:00 pm and Saturday 20th April 2.00p.m. and 7.00p.m. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nTICKETS\nBOOK ONLINE

SUMMARY:Church & Coast Soundbath Pilgrimage.
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the first event to take place as part of our special Church & Coast Soundbath Pilgrimage. \nWe will be joined by guest artist Glenda Allaway (harp) at St Mary & St Eanswythe Church\, Folkestone (Kent\, UK). \nThe soundbath is an immersive and meditative sound performance where you are invited to close your eyes and tune to the sound as we play live continuously for an hour. \nFor our Church & Coast series\, prior to each soundbath we are offering an optional short tour of the historic location (led by a local enthusiast)\, plus a short informal workshop. You are welcome to attend any part of the event using this ticket. \n\n4:15pm Arrival and short informal church tour optional (approx 30 mins)\n5pm Short informal workshop – a chance to meet the artists and learn about the instruments optional (approx 30 mins)\n5:30pm Short break & opportunity to meet other participants optional (30 mins)\n6pm Soundbath event (1 hour)\n7pm Questions & reflections optional (approx 15 mins)\n\nPlease arrive at 5:45pm if you wish to take part in the soundbath only. \nCost\nPlease pay in accordance to your financial circumstances. If you can afford the upper prices you are helping us continue this work and making it available to those on lower incomes. Please book enough tickets for everybody in your party (including all children). \nSuggested contribution: £5 – £20 per place. \nWe are offering a FULL series ticket option (come to as many as you wish) for £25 \nWhat to expect and bring\nThe lead artists will introduce the soundbath meditation and offer some guidance on how to best to enjoy the experience (e.g. deep breathing). The meditation will take place to an improvised experimental “soundscape” using a variety of instruments. This is a seated experience so there is no need to bring a mat. You may wish to bring a small cushion to sit on. You can also stand if you wish to. People often choose to close their eyes during the meditation. \nWe recommend you bring warm clothes as inside the church is always a little cooler (unless a heat wave is upon us!). \nHot and cold drinks will be available. \nThe short church tour will be led by a local enthusiast – an opportunity to learn about the history\, features and folklore of each historic location. The short tour is suitable for a general public (non-specialist) audience. \nThe guest artist will lead a short informal workshop to introduce their instrument and answer any questions you may have. If you wish\, you may choose to participate in some improvised music creation using your voice\, body percussion or light percussion instruments (provided). \nChildren\nThe soundbath element will involve sitting in silence for 45-60 minutes. Children are welcome provided they can seat through the experience. The soundbath is not usually suitable for very young children\, though they are welcome to attend the tour and workshop. Children must be supervised by an accompanying adult at all times. \nTravel\nWherever possible\, we would encourage attendees to walk\, cycle or use public transport to attend the event. Folkestone is well-served by local buses\, as well as train connections to Ashford\, Dover\, Ramsgate and London (with High Speed connections). There are also many local walking routes nearby in areas of historic and environmental interest including the sea front path to Sandgate/Hythe\, Folkestone Warren\, Kent Downs\, The Weald and Romney Warren.

SUMMARY:Folkestone's Fishing Heritage and History Museum
DESCRIPTION:Fishing and Heritage Museum\nNo matter how much we may regard Folkestone as a place of regeneration\, the original infrastructure\, and natural landscape inevitably remain first and foremost. \nFishing is a fundamental asset that has benefited Folkestone throughout centuries as our natural heritage- living through\, within\, and beyond the breathing of our seaside town. It’s integral then\, to keep this ingrained history alive through our own learning and recognition… when today\, only 22 men operating 9 boats are supported on our waters\, a far cry from being the town’s main industry. \nThe team at Folkestone’s Fishing History and Heritage Museum are now open daily from 10:30-16:00. For free\, you have the opportunity to get hands-on experience of life on a fishing boat- learning rope splicing\, net breeding\, mending a variety of knots\, and handling items to discover their use\, size\, and weight around the difficulties of operating in small moving vessels. Visitors can also examine artefacts\, original photographs\, equipment and have a nose around the items for sale. \nFolkestone Fishing Museum is nestled under the arches on The Stade opposite Rocksalt.  It tells the many stories of families and fishing that were the mainstay of Folkestone for hundreds of years.  It’s run by a small group of retired fishermen who can trace their ancestry back through generations of fishermen working out of the harbour just across from the museum’s entrance. \nThe Stade (near the fish market)\nAdmission FREE\n

SUMMARY:Folkestone’s 20th Century Contemporary Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:In 2023 Folkestone Museum were the recipients of a very generous gift from Creative Folkestone! \nFor a little over forty years Folkestone had an arts centre on The Leas\, the New Metropole Arts Centre\, housed in what until 1959 had been the Metropole Hotel. Whilst the majority of the building was converted into flats the main public rooms were not. Into these the building’s owner\, and philanthropist\, Gerald Glover created a venue that would see art\, in its widest sense\, embedded in the town. \nAs the work and reputation of the New Metropole Arts Centre grew it became nationally renowned. Attracting major exhibitions including retrospectives including Henry Moore and Jacob Epstein during its first ten years\, it would\, during the 1970s come under the wing of the Kent Education Committee; in effect Kent County Council (KCC)\, as well as attracting funding & support from the Arts Council. \nInitially the Centre only borrowed artworks for display but with a new education remit as an adult education venue it started to assemble its own collection. The collecting occurred in a variety of ways\, including gifts from artist\, purchases and works produced on site. Much was driven by the centre itself but acquisitions also came about while working alongside the KCC visual arts loans service\, which as lent to schools and similar organisation across the county. With the closure of the centre in the 2000s the collection was inherited by Creative Folkestone\, who in turn worked with the Folkestone Arts Trust\, as day-to-day custodians to display the collection in other venues in the town until the global pandemic arose. \nThe collection includes work by Royal College of Art graduates Fred Cuming and John Titchell\, who both lived and worked locally. Others such as David Greenhall and Michael Chaplin also feature\, Chaplin being well known as one of the experts on Channel 4’s Watercolour Challenge. Beyond artists working in Kent the collection also features work by well known artists such as John Piper\, Edward Ardizzone\, Peter Blake and Carel Weight. The last significant acquisition occurred in the 1990s with a gift from Carel Weight of work from his own collection\, both his paintings and works by Andrew Freeth\, Lucien & Orvida Pissaro among others. \nWith thanks to Chair Sir Roger De Hann CBE DL and fellow Trustees of Creative Folkestone \nWith over 200 works in The Metropole Collection the exhibition will be regularly rehung as it is not possible to display it in its entirety. Please note that for preservation of the works on display light levels have been kept low\, but can be risen temporarily for those with visual impairments. \nThe exhibition closes on Saturday 15th June\, open hours are 10.00am to 4.00pm; last entry to the exhibition at 3.30pm. \nFor further details email enquiries@folkestone-tc.gov.uk\, call 01303 257946 and select option 0 (office hours only) or call into Folkestone Museum & Town Hall.

SUMMARY:The Armed Man - a Mass for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Folkestone Choral Society offer an awe-inspiring performance of “The Armed Man – a Mass for Peace” by Karl Jenkins\, a profound masterpiece that resonates with the timeless message of unity and hope. The Armed Man was commissioned to mark the new millennium. It is set in a framework of Christian music in a wide range of musical styles which reflect on the joy of peace and the futility of war. The sounds of an approaching army followed by Moslem Call to Prayers set the scene for a powerfully moving programme.\n Tickets are available from the Leas Cliff Hall (opening times restricted) or buy online at: tinyurl.com/4wspwz4n

Our programmes range from the great oratorios to more modern composers. Some concerts also include popular concertos and orchestral pieces to complement the choral works.
