DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Tristan Banks Quartet returns to the Tower World Jazz Room\, following a full house show in March 2023! \nHis debut album\, View From Above\, encapsulates Tristan Banks’ experience as a versatile artist\, covering a range of styles that he has been deeply involved with during his career.\nThough predominantly jazz-led\, elements of Latin and fusion influences can be detected\, though this never betrays the core purpose\, of which Tristan explains:\n“The idea was to push the acoustic jazz quartet format to the limit\, being able to re-image the possibilities that the classic saxophone\, piano\, bass\, drums line-up can manifest\, and by being conscious of the sonic traditions that are typically replayed to confirm the listeners tastes while avoiding the genres timbral clichés.” \nThis ambition has been manifested with distinction by Banks and his band of stunningly accomplished instrumentalists\, ultimately resulting in an engaging and vivacious body of work that sets the standard for new jazz releases in 2023. \nTristan Banks brings together his long-standing musical friends (Paul Booth on woodwind\, John Crawford on piano and Davide Mantovani on basses) to realise his vision. \nFrom very first listen\, the synergy between players is undoubtedly apparent – each musician possesses an innate understanding of each other\, using their intuition to allow each other to achieve full potential as individuals\, while seamlessly gelling as a unit. DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Thomas Adès\, one of the world’s foremost musicians\, renowned as both a composer and performer worldwide\, to perform an evening of piano works in our wonderful seaside town. \nA prodigious composer\, conductor and pianist\, Adès was described by the New York Times in 2007 as one of today’s ‘most accomplished overall musicians.’ From exquisite chamber pieces to stage works\, his diverse body of work immediately connects with audiences\, and assesses the fundamentals of music afresh.  ​ \nAs a conductor\, Adès appears regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Royal Concertgebouw\, and Finnish Radio Orchestra. DESCRIPTION:The String Sinfonia from the University of Kent\, the wonderfully talented university students string orchestra which I direct\,  is coming to Folkestone on Friday 10 May at 7pm for for a free one hour concert in the Green Room at the Grand. The programme will include \nSerenade by Dag Wiren                    composed by one of Sweden’s best known 20th century composers \nSang Till Lotta by Jan Sandstorm      a piece for Trombone and strings \nBroken Voices by Juliet Lewis           a new piece composed by one of our own students \nUlysses Awakes by John Woolrich     for viola solo and strings          If you dont know this piece you MUST come and hear it\, it is indescribably powerful \nSuite for Strings by Libby Croad         an exciting fabulous piece composed in 2018 by one of the UK’s leading current female composers \nThe programme\, featuring 20th and 21st century only string writing (the oldest piece in the programme) was composed in 1937\, will showcase both the melodious\, lyrical and beautiful nature of new\, contemporary string writing and will highlight the incredible talent of our UKC students. If you are a msuic teacher\, it is a great aspirational concert to encourage your students to attend. And you dont even need to go onto to studying at the top conservatoire to enjoy making great music as a student.  I’d love a huge audience for them\, as we are performing out of our home turf that campus is. The concert is free (but donations are always welcomed :):) \, it will last one hour. Please do come: it is a perfect way to kick off of your weekend.
