SUMMARY:The Best Man - A rehearsed reading performed in the Tower Theatre Studio
DESCRIPTION:by Gore Vidal. Directed by Stephen Brasher.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNovember 4 at 7:30pm\n\nA rehearsed reading performed in the Tower Theatre Studio \nCast\nSecretary William Russell : Simon Lee\nAlice Russell\, his wife : to be cast\nDick Jensen\, Russell’s campaign manager : John McSpadyen\nCatherine\, a campaign aide : Deborah Mary Schneidermann\nSenator Joseph Cantwell : Randy Brown\nMabel Cantwell\, his wife: Katherine Kennet\nDon Blades\, Cantwell’s campaign manager : Harry Reeder\nEx President Arthur Hockstader : Tom Tillery\nMrs Sue-Ellen Gamadge\, head of the party’s women’s organisation : Katie Smith\nSenator Clyde Carlin : Matthew Ibbotson\nDr Artinian : Katie Smith\nSheldon Marcus : to be cast\nReporters and Delegates : Deborah Mary Schneidermann\, Meredith Heinrich\nNews Commentator : Stephen Brasher \n\n\n\n(Eugene Luther) Gore Vidal\, novelist\, essayist\, screen writer and someone who almost became as well known for his  arguments with other public figures as for his writing\, only made one venture into stage drama. There were several made for tv plays\, but The Best Man stands as his lone venture onto Broadway. A lifelong political campaigner\, Vidal had a very jaundiced view of the American political process. Given the times we might have expected him to be a fan of JFK but he was nothing of the sort\, wishing for a more intellectual and principled candidate for the highest office and his views are clearly reflected in this play. The main character\, William Russell is a former state governor and cabinet minister but is also an intellectual and not exactly a man of the people. Worse still his marriage is basically a sham and with his wife\, Alice\, is desperately putting on a show of unity for the press and party. With all this against him and a fierce contest for the backing of ex President Hockstader\, his unprincipled rival Senator Joe Cantwell goes for the kill and digs the dirt. Will Russell respond in kind? Can he save his candidacy and his marriage? Is he really the Best man for the job?

Beton is strong\, resistant\, durable\, and combines all four elements: water\, air\, fire\, and earth. Beton Collective draws from these qualities in their approach to both artistic and curatorial work. \nJoseph’s and Katie’s first collaboration was a mixed media installation\, Hyrc Krabowski (2022)\, exhibited at the Pocket Gallery in Folkestone. Their shared love of placing art outside the borders of a traditional gallery space led them right to the doors of the Grand\, a legendary Folkestone venue famous for its cultural past. They are currently managing The Green Room at the Grand. \nAs artists\, they are exploring different medias with a particularly strong interest in photography and installation. As curators\, they’re in the process of expanding their Beton Gallery beyond the borders of their Hawkinge house. \nTheir work investigates the topics of immigration\, belonging\, language and identity\, love\, loss\, body\, and desire. \n

SUMMARY:SALT + EARTH: Delve: A Search for Words That Rhyme With Hope (Reading)
DESCRIPTION:Francine Hajilou’s latest work is underpinned by notions of destruction\, rebirth\, loss\, and change and uses ideas and language related to physical and psychological trauma as a springboard to investigate creatively a series of cataclysmic events in the natural world and to narrate life in the Anthropocene – Delve: a search for words that rhyme with hope\, is both cautionary tale and quest. \n\n\n\nFolkestone has recently experienced a series of landslips\, that have torn away the familiar\, revealing fragility and instability where there was once stability and certainty. In response to these local geological events\, Francine is exploring the insights she has gleaned from a variety of shifting physical landscapes not only locally\, but across wider geographical and temporal spaces. \nThroughout this project\, Francine draws deeply on her Jamaican heritage to frame her understanding of ideas such as upheaval\, world-building\, joy\, and resistance. For SALT+EARTH 2024 Francine will share her titular interactive visual poem Delve. Inspired by visual artist Ellen Gallagher’s process of accretion\, erasure\, and extraction\, Delve will allow the audience to interact with it; creating a changeable\, polyphonic poem that uses text\, organic\, and inorganic materials\, including found chalk from both Samphire Hoe in Dover and Caps Blanc Nez in Calais (a tribute to Kent Downs National Landscape and the Parc Naturel Regional des Caps et Marais d’Opale joint ambition become a cross channel Geopark). \nSocial media: IG: @francinehajilou @franhajiloupoetry \nAccessibility: Kollectiv has wheelchair access for the upstairs level from The Old High Street\, wheelchair accessibility for the downstairs level is from Tontine Street.

DESCRIPTION:Artist Name: Rhiana Bonterre \n\n\nEvent Type: Exhibition\nDate: Friday 4th October\, Saturday 5th October\, Sunday 6th October 2024\nTime: 10:00 – 17:00 hrs\nLocation: Urban Room Folkestone\, Harbour Street\, CT20 1QN. \nThreading together different practices\, perspectives and learnings that relate to alternative ways of connection to the natural world\, Rhiana will create a short artist-documentary film\, broadly depicting the work of various commissioned artists for SALT + EARTH festival\, alongside her own reflections\, absorbing the themes of these works and that of further research and findings around decolonisation and the natural world. Throughout the work\, Rhiana will consider her particular positionality within the climate emergency\, and this perspective will be woven between the documentation of work produced for and throughout the festival. \nReflecting\, unlearning\, relearning … Trails Interwoven embodies these words\, and will be presented as an exhibition and a conversation. It will feature the film presented as a work in process – alongside photographs\, moving images and sound recordings which all contribute to the ongoing assembling of the final film. \nJumping between space and time\, the ancestral\, the present\, the question of a future…shifting between the hills of the Kent Downs\, and the forests of Trinidad\, weaving together the collective\, and the personal… \nProviding a plethora of ideas\, inspirations and insights into altering how we collectively relate to the natural world\, the exhibition aims to pose pathways and portals of renewed understandings and ways of accessing the land\, in a way that exudes delicacy as much as it does urgency. \nSocial media: IG: @rhiana.mp4\nWebsite: rhianabonterre.cargo.org \nAccessibility: Urban Room Folkestone is working on becoming more accessible. It currently has step-free access with ramps to all indoor areas and accessible seating to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. It does not currently have a disabled toilet\, however\, the closest one is 200 yards away at Creative Folkestone Quarterhouse\, which will be available for use throughout our SALT + EARTH programme. Disabled parking is available directly outside the venue. Service animals are welcome. In line with our mission to make URF more accessible\, we are happy to be contacted to discuss any specific requirements or suggestions that you might have. If you are interested in attending an event at URF but have any accessibility queries – please email us on info@folkestonefringe.com. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:SALT + EARTH: The Body as Data
DESCRIPTION:Artist Name: Sidonie Carey-Green and Tom Tegento \n\n\nEvent Type: Film screening (loop)\nDate: Friday 4th October\, Saturday 5th October\, Sunday 6th October\nTime: 10:00 – 17:00 hrs \nThe Body as Data follows a series of participants as they re-map the Kent Coast of England. Emerging from the summer’s Body as Data project workshops and walking events\, this film captures local migrant and community participants as they draw their own borderlines across the Kent coast. By highlighting the constructed nature of borders\, the film presents an alternative\, mobilised version of these boundaries\, created by those whom the borders deny. \nThe 2024 Body as Data Project wanted to connect local communities and those who have experienced forced migration through creative dance practice\, walking\, and surveillance technologies to come together to mobilise the border of the Kent coast from Margate to Folkestone. Over the summer\, a series of community workshops and site specific walking events took place which explored how the ‘body-as-data’ can draw its own border by re-imagining the impact of drone technology and the power of walking practices. \nDirector – Sidonie Carey-Green\nProducer – Jodie Cole\nSound – Andre Braga-Verissimo\nLead Artist – Tom Tegento\nCamera – Mijo Peraica\nEdit – Sidonie Carey-Green \nSocial media: @sidoniecareygreen @thebodyasdataproject\nWebsite: www.thebodyasdataproject.com \nAccessibility: Block 67 has wheelchair access from the street and many parking options very close. SUMMARY:SALT + EARTH: Sea Flutes - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Artist Name: Jim Lockey \n\n\nEvent Type: Exhibition\nDate: Friday 4th October\, Saturday 5th October\, Sunday 6th October. \nWe stand on shores that are sculpted by the waves. Tides that erode the land release clay that was itself formed in the beds of ancient waterways. This is the material that is used to create the ceramic sculptural objects known as ‘sea flutes’. When lowered into water (or activated by the movement of waves)\, a sea flute emits a plaintive\, haunting whistle. The sea activates the flutes\, in a sense giving it life. The clay body of the sea flute can be read as an analogue for the human body and its sound – our breath. Human life too is dependent upon\, and shaped by water. The sound of the sea flute transforms the water’s energy into sound making it tangible in a new way that can be experienced through hearing. \nThe sea flutes will be carried to the shore in a short procession following the sound of a clay horn. Players will enter the water and activate the flutes. The audience is invited to move amongst the players and listen to the gentle sound\, or participate themselves in sounding a flute. \nIn the weeks leading up to the procession a workshop will be held. Workshop participants will be able to create their own ceremonial objects using the same black clay from which the sea flutes are made. And will have the opportunity to take part in the procession and first activation of the flutes.\nFree \nSocial media: IG: @jimlockeyartist\nWebsite: www.jimlockey.co.uk \nAccessibility: Fourth Wall has wheelchair access from the street. The closest accessible car park is Payers Park Car Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Salt and Earth Festival - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Artist Name: Sara Trillo and Fiona Parry\nDate: Friday 4th – Sunday 6th October 2024\nTime: 10:00 – 17:00 hrs\nSocial media: IG: @fionaannparry @saratrillo\nWebsite: saratrillo.co.uk \nSara Trillo and Fiona Parry are collaborating on a series of planting and sculptural experiments\, inspired by the history of dene holes (agricultural chalk mines)\, subterranean mythologies and agriculture in Kent. Sara is an artist who has been creating works in sculpture\, drawing and textiles inspired by dene holes for the past two years. Fiona is a gardener and curator\, interested in regenerative growing practices and collaborations between art and horticulture. \nDene holes are chalk mines found throughout Kent\, which were dug for the extraction of subterranean chalk in order to marl the soil\, a practice spanning over two thousand years. With these mysterious underground chalk mines as the starting point\, Sara and Fiona are exploring crops grown historically in Kent and in chalk marled soil\, such as clover and turnips\, as well as those associated with the underworld and agriculture in mythology\, such as wheat and pomegranates. They are experimenting with plants\, roots\, soils and materials from a sculptural and horticultural point of view. Working with 3 market gardens\, they are testing growing forage herbs and other crops in chalk and Thanet sand – materials which would have been dug from dene holes. They are also creating sustainable sculptural forms / planting containers the length of particular plants’ roots\, exploring and preserving the underground root structures of clovers and other chalkland plants grown in regenerative agriculture to build soil health. \nAccessibility: Kollectiv has wheelchair access for the upstairs level from The Old High Street\, wheelchair accessibility for the downstairs level is from Tontine Street.
