SUMMARY:Summer Holiday Family Activities: Medieval Week!Family Workshop with Alison Moore
DESCRIPTION:Week 5 of our family summer holiday activities is Medieval Week. \n\n\n\nOn the 19th and 20th of August\, we’re making paper plate dragons. Dragons were important symbols and legends in Medieval England – they were regularly part of stories about saints (including Saint George) and part of royal heraldry. \nOn the 21st and 22nd of August\, join us to make a model of a medieval castle. There used to be two castles in Folkestone – on the Bayle and up on Castle Hill. Learn all about them and make a castle to take home! \nOur Medieval Week family activities are designed for children and young people under 13. \nWe’ll run four activity sessions each day at 10:30\, 11:30\, 13:30 and 14:30. \nWhen you arrive at the museum before your chosen session\, please pick up your FREE timed ticket at the main reception desk! Tickets are first come\, first served on the day – we don’t allow booking in advance.

SUMMARY:TWOMANTING @ HARBOURSIDE SQUARE
DESCRIPTION:SUNSHINE AFRO-ROOTS DUO FROM UK/SIERRA LEONE\n\nTwoManTing was formed in 2024 when Sierra Leonean percussionist Jah-man Aggrey\, and guitarist Jon Lewis were playing together as part of dance band\, Le Cod Afrique\, at events such as Montreux Jazz Festival and WOMAD. \nThe duo immediately became a hit on the UK festival circuit with their brand of bouncy “Sunshine Afro-roots”. Shows have included Glastonbury\, Secret Garden Party\, Boomtown Fair\, Shrewsbury Folk\, Wilderness and Green Man Festivals to name but a few. Using guitar\, live loops and percussion the duo creates a highly danceable full band sound and their reputation has earned them recent support slots with the likes of Tinariwen and The Oyster Band. Their music is often featured on BBC 6Music and Radio 3. \nShows feature palm-wine\, acoustic dub and highlife grooves with thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics on subjects ranging from childhood memories\, political protest and er.…duvets. \nThe latest album “Rhymes with Orange” draws on a range of sounds from 1970s Sierra Leone to 1980s UK punk through to the Soukous beats of the Congo. \n“Brilliant – if you want a bit of early summer\, then get this into your ear-holes!” (Lauren Laverne\, BBC 6Music) \n“John Peel would play something like this on his programme and the world would suddenly seem a better place” (Steve Lamacq\, BBC 6Music)

SUMMARY:Ian Siegal Live at Blues In The Night
DESCRIPTION:Ian Siegal is one of the most gifted singers & writers in contemporary Blues” – MOJO Magazine.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Whether classic Blues belting…. or dripping Soul\, his trademark lyrical genius is everywhere” – Blues in Britain. \nIan Siegal is an award-winning Bluesman with a deserved international following and a great collection of acclaimed recordings. He is a 4-time winner in the British Blues Awards.\nWe are so excited to present Ian Siegal at Blues I The Night\, this is a real coup for Folkestone!. Ian is in no way a predictable artist\, he’s one of our greatest songwriters\, constantly writing whilst travelling and performing\, also collaborating with the best\, but also. Whether he’s serving up originals or covers\, live or on record\, you can bet he’ll deliver a characterful performance.\nIt is said that Siegal’s earliest musical memories are of the likes of Buddy Holly\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Elvis and Chuck Berry\, but that it was on hearing the great Little Richard that he really caught the music bug and became nothing short of obsessive about it. This led him into a life-long passion for the Blues and all of its various branches\, and most of all the inimitable Muddy Waters.\nAfter the usual musical apprenticeship\, Ian’s writing and playing skills developed\, and appearances on larger festival stages to bigger audiences enabled him to hone his skills into becoming one of the most naturally exciting and vibrant talents on the scene today. Awareness among British audiences of Ian’s talents grew considerably after two consecutive tours opening for Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, including a performance at the Royal Albert Hall; and then in 2005 he toured playing as a duo with Big Bill Morganfield (Muddy Waters’ son). “That’s as near as I can ever get to the great man himself\,” says Ian. \nIan’s first major CD release was in Ian Siegal Band’s 2001 album “I Shall Be Standing In The Morning” on which he drafted in some of the top players around to supplement his band. The album is an entirely original composition\, with reviewers drawing comparisons with Tom Waits\, Bruce Springsteen\, Dr. John and Van the Man.\nHis solo album “Meat & Potatoes” followed in April 2005 . For this recording he augmented his core trio sound with British guitarist Matt Schofield (who also produced the album)\, and Jonny Henderson on Hammond organ.\nIn 2008 his solo album The Dust was released. In 2009\, Ian released the album\, Broadside. This album was voted “Blues Album of the Year 2009” by Mojo.\nHis 2011 release\, The Skinny\, was recorded by Ian Siegal And The Youngest Sons in North Mississippi with Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars as record producer and also playing on the album. Backing Ian were the sons of some notable Mississippi blues men\, including on guitar Robert Kimbrough\, on guitar and bass Garry Burnside\, and on drums Rod Bland. SUMMARY:Summer Holiday Family Activities: Geology Week!Family Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nWeek four of our family holiday activities is Geology week with Alison Moore! \nOn the 12th of August\, we’re making geodes – rocks lined with crystals. Geodes form where there are air bubbles inside rocks. They often occur after volcanic eruptions create rocks. \nOur friends Astrid and Craig from FLAMS are back on the 13th of August with another craft activity all about the Folkestone Elephant. \nWe’re making geodes again on the 14th of August. \nOn the 15th of August\, join us at the museum to make your own fossil. \nOur Geology Week family activities are designed for children and young people under 13. \nWe’ll run four activity sessions a day at 10:30\, 11:30\, 13:30 and 14:30. When you arrive at the museum before your chosen session\, please pick up your FREE timed ticket at the main reception desk! Tickets are first come\, first served on the day – we don’t allow booking in advance.
