WORKSHOP: Writing Sex and Desire with Leone Ross

November 17 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Desire is messy. Tender. Dangerous. Quiet. An unexpectedly wet kiss in the kitchen. A date gone very well indeed. Great sex thrills us, undoes us, comforts and sustains us – and when written well, it can stay with the reader forever.

Join Leone Ross, award-winning author, editor and literary force, for a fearless, freeing writing workshop that dives deep into lust, longing and intimacy. Longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction for her sensual, genre-defying novel This One Sky Day, Leone is celebrated for her sharp insight, dazzling imagination and emotional depth – and in this rare writing workshop, she’ll help you unlock your own secrets.

This isn’t just about writing provocatively (though there’ll be plenty of that). It’s about finding the right language for power, tenderness, shame and connection. How do we navigate bodies on the page? What does sex writing reveal about your characters’ darker and lighter selves – or yours? What happens if we get it wrong… or gloriously, unexpectedly right?

Expect bold prompts, juicy discussion, and a space that’s both safe and electric. Leone will ask you to take sex seriously – and gently push you beyond your comfort zone.

Curated by award-winning author and journalist Sophie Haydock (The Flames, Madame Matisse), this year’s programme features more than 50 events over 11 days, bringing together world-class writers, radical thinkers and unforgettable conversations – all inspired by Folkestone’s spirit of enabling creativity and transformative change.

We want the festival to be for everyone. That’s why we’ve introduced a £5 ticket – a no-questions-asked option for anyone who might be struggling to afford events.

And if you’re planning to come to more than a handful of events, don’t miss our great-value Festival Pass, which gives you access to all events (excluding classes, which need to be booked separately) for just £140.

There’s so much to discover – from headline talks to intimate workshops, big ideas to local voices. Check out the full programme, including our much-loved Local Talent Showcase and a new series of Creative Writing Workshops designed to spark your imagination.

We delighted that our onsite bookseller this year is Waterstones Folkestone.

We thank our major sponsor Saga and supporting sponsors Eurotunnel, Holiday Extras and Friends of the Folkestone Book Festival along with our Education Partner, Canterbury Christ Church University for making this year’s festival possible.
