Dear Go Folkestone Members,
Go Folkestone are obviously protesting the closure and threats to our main Grace Hill Library, along with other groups such as the NFS. There is a Facebook Group Friends of Folkestone Library and a petition, but a big campaign may be just a party-political rant-fest. Mood music is good.
It seems from contacts I have made that the administration knows full well this closure is a vote-loser and something more constructive better be said before the elections, even though Kent County Council are in a worse financial position than District. It is a listed Grade II building, unlike Folca/Debenhams, and so won’t be knocked down. Furthermore, if you cite the Leas Pavilion, which GF got listed in 2008 but which is being knocked around a lot, then one thing it has over the Leas Pavilion is that it is a densely developed, valuable, tall building already: so again, no great danger. The leaky multi-pitch tile roof is the main problem with the library. Therefore, what we should support, and what may well happen, is arguably a phased re-opening, with the everyday ground floor library opening sooner rather than later, for which it seems money is being found. But the upper floors must be watertight and not left for years to decay.
The Lib Dems went down big time when they closed the public conveniences circa 2004, and the Conservatives know this looks a bit like it and are giving it high priority. Labour and others are helping with ideas. Write to your councillors suggesting this way forward and we should get an improved library and a saved, magnificent historic building. If you are an estate agent, FHDC may well be looking for some new space for the archive, which must be kept in Folkestone. The Town Council and Museum are helping. In the longer term, since arts and tourism get more financial priority with grants, perhaps wrongly, than saving a heritage room, we might explore the distant possibility of an upper floor Sir Roger De Haan Triennial Art Gallery. Very modern art of course!
Changing the subject, please tell us of any likely street tree planting sites or dead street trees and stumps near you, with the specific number of the nearest house. The Town Council are a few months from their final annual selection of sites to plant, but are looking around, and have several thousand pounds,
